As far as it being normal... Well, it is somewhat normal, but it really depends on the doctor. I had a physical when I was 23, and the doctor wanted to give me a prostate exam, but I asked him not to and he respected my request.

Some doctors do like to offer it, even when a male is young, because an ounce of prevention does go a long way. It's much better to catch any signs of prostate cancer as early as possible.

However, a person should be warned and made to feel comfortable. It is obviously awkward for both males and females whenever they have a physical exam. But a good doctor will make you feel at ease, and act professional.

People are very sensitive about their bodies, especially their private areas, and they deserve respect and courtesy.

I wouldn't say this new doctor's bedside manners are normal, but the prostate check is normal for some.

First of all, ALL males should get their prostate examined every year from the age of 25 onwards. Earlier is better too because if there was a problem, the earliest you catch it the easier it will be to deal with it and the less amount of complications can arrise.

By BF has had a few prostate exams in the past when he was going for a general check up. For some doctors, it is apparently normal to do the prostate check almost every time they see you come in for a check up. Actually, the annual check up (once a year) should include a prostate check for all men.

So I wouldn't worry about your friend's docotr. His motives are OK, but it's his manners which disturbs me. I mean who can relax when someone is yelling at you?

A FULL physical examination may call for this. You mentioned that this guy was seeing a particular doctor for the first time. In this case, it could well have been a legitimate probe.

What is wrong is if the doctor really behaved that way, or did your friend tell it that way to make his discomfort funny?

Absolutely not. This was not professional in my oppinion esp since he didn't warn his before hand. Most of the time you do not get prostate exams until you are older unless there is a family history of cancer. Doctors should tell you everything he is doing and every procedure and why before he does it.

Doctors and dentists tend to over do things such as testing, xrays, writing the name of a pill for the name of a condition, ect.
